CAD M179 Variable Pattern Condenser Microphone

CAD M179 Variable Pattern Condenser Microphone

The CAD M179 Condenser Microphone combines a vintage capsule design with advanced electronics. The M179 features the dual pattern version of the original Equitek E-300 capsule, an externally biased capsule with a gold sputtered 1.1-inch diaphragm. The pattern control knob on the M179 has a center detented Cardioid position. This allows you to quickly and consistently lock the mic in ahardCardioid pattern. By turning the knob clockwise from the center, the pattern varies continuously from Cardioid, to Subcardioid, through Omnidirectional. By turning the knob counterclockwise from the center, the pattern varies continuously from Cardioid, to Hypercardioid through Bidirectional. This allows you to adjust to the optimal pattern needed for almost any recording or live situation. The American Made M179 has a high speed, low noise operational amplifier head amp, coupled with a new discrete high efficiency power supply circuit. This results in incredibly low noise, low distortion and fast transient response. The M179 will even work with 24-volt phantom supplies! The M179 also features a non-capacitive 20 dB pad switch and an 80 Hz high-pass filter.CAD M179 FeaturesContinuously Variable Pattern with aHardCardioid center detentLarge 1.1-inch Dual Diaphragm External Bias Condenser CapsuleGold Sputtered DiaphragmsHigh SPL Capability (143 dB SPL with pad)Transformerless balanced output circuits20 dB non capacitive pad6dB/Octave @ 100Hz High-Pass filterStainless steel internal pop/EMI filterTypical FET (field effect transistor) condenser microphones use discrete designs. 5 Stars CAD M179 mic ROCKS!!!
I have used many mics over the years, from AKG’s to Neumann’s, and as you know, they’re pretty costly but get you that great full warm sound. I always thought that to get that sound, you needed to shell out the bucks for studio time in the places that use them. How can you get that sound for less than $1,000 (and that’s IF you’re lucky enough to find them for that price!!!)? GET YOURSELF THIS CAD M179 MIC!!! I kid you not-it’s versatile Variable pattern selector function alone is worth it! With a low self-noise rating, sleek design, great shockmount, and just an overall warm vintage-but-still-modern sound, this baby has impressed a good number of my clients that SWEAR it’s been souped-up with high-end German tech modifying! Get it…you won’t be disappointed!!!

4 Stars Made in China these days
Contrary to the product description, all CAD mikes are made in China now, and receive only batch-level inspection in the U.S. (according to CAD Sales). I bought one of these to go along with my U.S.-made M177. Based on my initial tests, the two mikes are quite comparable in sound quality, which is to say, they sound quite good and are certainly worth their price. My older U.S.-made M177 has been very reliable.

Noise: very quiet (low self-noise from the mike). The M179 is slightly noisier than the M177.

Frequency response: designed to be flat, almost like a reference mike (what you hear is what you get). Good low-end response means that low frequency rumble is easily recorded; a roll-off switch is provided that will clean that up.

The neat feature of the M179 is the ability to change recording pattern from Figure-8 through omni. This works as advertised, although fresh out of the box the dial is quite stiff and generates noise/clicks as the pattern is changed (since this is normally set prior to recording, this should seldom if ever actually matter.) This feature is usually only available on relatively expensive mikes. Having it on the M179 makes this mike a good choice for a first home studio mike. Given the variety of uses this mike can be put to, I suspect I’ll be giving it plenty of work.

5 Stars Excellent mic for the price — esp. for vocals
I bought this mic after hearing good things about it, but I had never tried it. It has impressed me quite a bit since then. I use it in a small home studio set-up, along with a Presonus Firebox and Logic Pro on a Macbook.

For the price, this mic is a very good deal. It sounds much better than an Audio Technica 3035 that I had (and ended up selling shortly after getting this mic). I also got an Oktava MK-319 that is a much more expensive mic, and that was then sent to be mod’ed by Michael Joly (and therefore cost even more) and I’d say the two mics are very similar. I end up using the CAD M179 a lot more because it’s less valuable, but sounds just as good.

What else? It has low noise and combines the crispness you want from a condenser without being unpleasant. It sounds particularly great for male vocals, in my opinion, although I have used it for as a room drum-mic. I would highly recommend this mic, especially at this price point.

Behringer C 1 Studio Condenser Microphone

Posted: December 31st, 2009 | Author: Condenser Microphone Reviews | Filed under: Condenser Microphone Reviews | Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , | No Comments »

Behringer C 1 Studio Condenser Microphone

The BEHRINGER C-1 is a professional and super-affordable large-diaphragm condenser microphone with a cardioid polar pattern. It provides all the performance you’d expect in a top-notch professional condenser microphone: exceptionally flat frequency response, ultra low-noise transformerless FET input circuitry, and incredible audio transparency. With its high-quality transducer and gold-plated XLR output, the C-1 is very neutral-sounding and truly delivers on the promise of noise-free transmission. It also offers a phantom power LED indicator and a swivel stand mount. Whether miking acoustic or electric instruments or using it for vocals or drums, the BEHRINGER C-1 is an excellent choice for both live and studio applications.

User Ratings and Reviews

1 Star It doesn’t work Update, It works.
I plugged it into a mic preamp that works with a regular mic. The C-1 is not working at all. It makes noise but it does not transmit sound. The instructions are written in every language except English. Maybe there is an on off switch somewhere. It is best to avoid this one. It is too cheap to bother sending back.

Update: September 23, 2009. The mic does work. It was the cable that was bad. I will give it at least 4 stars but I am not able to change the rating after it is posted.

3 Stars Get’s the job done
This is a pretty solid mic for in home studio production. I’m a beginner and didn’t have a lot of money to spend so I bought this mic and it works well. However, due to my novice status in dealing with a studio condenser mic, I’m wondering if a higher quality mic may record at a higher volume. Yet all in all it is legit. Just starting out, this is the way to go.

5 Stars Great Microphone
For the money, this mic performs very well. It is very sensitive, I can hear my computer fans in the background with this mic. If you are going to use it for recording make sure you have a quiet room. I also put a pop filter on it. I’ve only had it a day, so I’ll see how it does in the long run.

5 Stars One Of The Best
I USE THIS MIC FOR AT HOME PURPOSES. I RECORD WITH BEHRINGER XENYX 1002 PREMIUM 10 INPUT MIXER.AND MY LAPTOP. PERFECT! ITS REALLY GREAT FOR A SMALL STUDIO..MAYBE FOR A BIGGER ONE TO??? BUT IT GOT DELIVERED FAST AND I COULDNT BE ANY HAPPIER WITH IT.NO LIE! FOR THIS PRICE YOU COULDNT BE IT! BUT JUST TO LET YOU KNOW, YOU HAVE TO HAVE A XLR PHANTOM POWER OUTPUT TO POWER THE MIC BECAUSE THE MIC NEEDS PHANTOM POWER.

5 Stars Good Enough for Me
I’ve been a guitar player for 25 years. However, this is the first time I’ve recorded my own vocals at home. I bought this mic to record a project at home and so far, so good. My voice is not great, but after a few takes and some Auto-tune, I think it sounds darn near passable. As far as frequency response and other mic jargon, I don’t know much about (guitar player, remember). I think it sounds and performs quite well. I’m recording into a FireWire Solo interface and there is no noise. Additionally, I am recording in a spare bedroom with no soundproofing, vocal isolation, bass traps or anything like that and it sounds good enough for me.

User Ratings and Reviews

5 Stars nice and clean, basic line mixer
clean signal, no issues. I use this mainly as a sub-mixer for drums when we’re playing a larger gig requiring miking all the drums (rather than just the kick)… then run the out from this into one channel of our main board… works great for that. haven’t used it for anything else, so can’t comment.

5 Stars Great and simple device!
This device was needed so that I could have 4 mics included in my professional karaoke setup. It can handle up to six mics and two of the outlets can provide phantom power. It is rugged and has a very simple and clean interface. I can’t comment on the quality of the components because it hasn’t been used enough yet.

AKG C414BXLII Vocal Condenser Microphone Includes shockmount case windscreen and pop filter

The AKG C414BXLII is an absolute classic with a distinctive timbre especially designed for recording solo vocals.Everything on the redesigned model has been changed except for that legendary sound. A fifth polar pattern (wide cardioid) has been added for additional flexibility. The capsule tuning for the new model is the same as previous – the XL II has AKG’s trademarkvoice-friendlyresponse for smooth vocal performance. All switch positions, microphone output overload, and power on/off status are indicated by LEDs which adds to the ease of use and visibility of settings of some dimly lit performance rooms. All function switches are located in the low-impedance section of the electronics to prevent problems in high humidity and also to minimize noise during control changes. Other features include 6dB higher sensitivity than the previous C 414 models, and extremely low self-noise (6 dB) – a major improvement. The new model is packaged in an all-metal road case and comes with a two-stage external pop filter, a shock mount, a windscreen and a frequency response curve chart of the microphone.FeaturesHigh sensitivity and extremely low self noiseFive switchable polar patterns for placement and application flexibilityTwo-color LEDs provide quick visual indication of selected polar pattern and output overloadElastic capsule suspension greatly minimizes structurally-transmitted noise from chassis vibrationH 85 professional shock mount/stand adapter, PF 80 external pop filter and W 414 X external windscreen. With the introduction of the NeXt Generation C 414 B-XL models, AKG sets new benchmarks for useful features, improved technical specifications, ease of use and available accessories. User Ratings and Reviews

5 Stars Favorite mic
I used this mic every day while running a studio. We had a whole closet of specialty mics but almost always grabbed the 414 eventually. Great on male vocals, violin, acoustic guitar…only reason I wouldn’t grab & try this first is if I was miking a guitar cab or close miking a snare. Buy two & use as the best overheads for a choral group or for a grand piano you ever use! No mic is perfect for every situation but with this and a few SM57s & 58s you’ll cover 90% of every situation with great sound.

5 Stars I would compare this mic with the U87
I would compare this mic with the U87

It’s very good

It’s called here in Recife a working horse…

Because it works wonders in any situation

It will all depend tho

On your ears and the situations you’re in like the room; your voice and imagination…
